Rooftop solar installations are gaining popularity in India, with installations reaching 15 GW, of which 3 GW are residential. When opting for rooftop solar, there are several factors to consider to ensure efficiency and safety.

  1. Placement: The orientation and angle of the roof play a crucial role in energy capture. If shading is a concern, elevated installations may be more effective. Different types of structures, such as low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise, can be used based on the terrain and sunlight exposure.

  2. Safety: Modules should be positioned in shadow-free areas to prevent hotspots and damage to solar cells. Proper torque marking during installation ensures secure mounting of modules, preventing damage and ensuring longevity.

  3. Material: Galvanised iron structures are recommended for durability and rust resistance, especially in humid or coastal environments. Prefabricated structures ensure quality and longevity of the components.

  4. Tilt angle: The tilt angle of the modules should be based on the latitude of the geography, typically between 8 to 30 degrees in India. A 10-degree tilt is optimal for southern regions based on seasonal energy needs.

  5. Trackers: While trackers can enhance energy production by following the sun’s path, they may not be suitable for rooftop installations due to limited space and complexity.

  6. Maximising generation: Ensure a shadow-free area during the design stage, use quality components, and monitor the system proactively for issues. Keeping panels clean is essential for optimal efficiency.

  7. Battery storage: Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) batteries are recommended for their energy density, cycle life, and fast-charging capabilities. Consider capacity, Depth of Discharge (DoD), charge/discharge rates, and thermal management requirements when choosing batteries.

By considering these factors and best practices, homeowners can maximize the efficiency and longevity of their rooftop solar installations. It is essential to stay informed about the latest technologies and regulations to make informed decisions about rooftop solar systems.
