Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been officially appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, as per Article 164(1) of the Indian Constitution, facilitating the establishment of a new BJP-led government in the state. An official notification from Assam’s parliamentary affairs department confirmed that Sarma will take his oath of office at 11:40 AM on Tuesday, May 12, at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.
The notification detailed that “in exercise of the powers vested in him under clause (1) of Article 164 of the Constitution of India, the Governor of Assam is pleased to appoint Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam.” The order was issued from Dispur on May 10 and was signed by Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.
The swearing-in ceremony is anticipated to officially signal the commencement of the new government in the northeastern state, following the electoral success of the BJP-led alliance. Earlier on the same day, Sarma claimed the mandate to form the next government after a meeting with the Governor. The parliamentary affairs department later disseminated the official notification confirming his appointment.
As one of the BJP’s most significant leaders in the Northeast, Sarma is set to continue his tenure as Chief Minister following his pivotal role in leading the party within the state.
