Vedanta Aluminium has made an announcement regarding the operation and maintenance of a smelter line at Jharsuguda in Odisha, which will be exclusively managed by women employees.

In this pioneering initiative, a potline at the smelter facility, situated in a special economic zone, will be transitioned into a fully women-managed operation. A potline is a crucial component of the aluminium smelting process where electrolytic reduction takes place to produce aluminium metal.

The implementation of this project will unfold in three phases, with over 100 duty positions identified across different levels, expertise, and competencies. Women employees from various business units within the company have been selected through internal job postings, diversity connect programs, and information dissemination initiatives. These employees are currently undergoing specialized on-the-job training with the support of technical anchors and senior leadership to ensure a smooth transition.

Sunil Gupta, the Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and operational excellence. He stated that empowering women with greater opportunities in core manufacturing roles not only challenges industry stereotypes but also builds a more equitable and future-ready workplace.

Pankaj Sureka, the Chief Human Resource Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted the company’s belief in the philosophy of ‘Shakti se Pragati’ or progress through empowerment. He mentioned that Vedanta Aluminium is dedicated to creating equal opportunities and facilitating actions that empower women to lead across all functions, from shop floors to leadership roles.

The company aims to achieve a 30% women workforce representation by FY2030 and is prioritizing 50% women hiring for fresher roles to ensure gender-balanced recruitment. Moreover, Vedanta Aluminium has launched several initiatives to enhance female participation in the metals and mining industry, including projects like ‘Shree Shakti’ and ‘Panchhi’ that support women in various ways.

In conclusion, Vedanta Aluminium’s initiative to have a smelter line operated and maintained exclusively by women showcases its commitment to fostering gender diversity and inclusive practices in its business operations. This forward-thinking approach not only promotes gender equality but also contributes to creating a more inclusive and progressive workplace environment.
