DY Chandrachud Steps In to Resolve Kapur Family Dispute

Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has been appointed to mediate a high-profile property dispute involving the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estate, valued at approximately ₹30,000 crore. The conflict is between Rani Kapur, Sunjay Kapur’s mother, and his wife, Priya Kapur, concerning a family trust.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court authorized the former Chief Justice to facilitate mediation after both parties indicated their willingness to seek an amicable resolution. Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized the need to keep the matter private, stating, “It is a family dispute. Let it be confined among the family only. It should not be a source of entertainment.”

The court directed the parties to appear before Chandrachud for mediation and requested a preliminary report from him, indicating that the case would be revisited in August.

Previously, on April 27, the Supreme Court sought a response from Priya Kapur and others regarding a lawsuit filed by Rani Kapur. This lawsuit aims to declare the family trust, established in October 2017, as “null and void.” Rani Kapur has alleged that the trust was created with “forged, fabricated and fraudulent” documents. Current legal proceedings concerning the control of the estate and its assets are ongoing in the Delhi High Court, while the Supreme Court’s petition seeks to maintain a status quo on the trust’s property transactions.
