During the quarter ending in December 2024, the promoter pledged holdings dropped to 0.84 per cent, valued at ₹1.63 trillion, down from 0.87 per cent in the previous quarter, as per a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The report highlighted that promoters of 69 companies in the BSE 500 index pledged part of their holdings during this period.

Notable companies like Sun Pharma Advanced Research and UPL saw their promoters release entire pledged holdings to repay debts. Among the Nifty 50 constituents, Apollo Hospitals, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, and JSW Steel had over 5 per cent of pledged promoter holdings.

The report also mentioned that while the pledged promoter holdings increased in companies like IndusInd Bank, Anand Rathi Wealth, Ashok Leyland, Anupam Rasayan, and Laurus Labs, there was a decrease in holdings for companies like Swan Energy, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Sun Pharma Advanced Research, Aurobindo Pharma, and Chambal Fertilisers.

Additionally, Medplus Health Services, Chalet Hotels, and GMR Airports were identified as having the highest pledged holdings in their overall holdings.

It’s important to note that pledging of shares does not necessarily indicate financial stress for a company or its promoters.
