Government Reduces MRP of 543 Anti-Cancer Medicines Effective November 9

New Delhi: The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced a significant reduction in the maximum retail price (MRP) for 543 different brands of anti-cancer medicines, which will take effect from November 9, 2026. This reduction aims to make essential cancer treatments more affordable for patients across the country.

Impact of Price Cuts on Cancer Treatment

The revised pricing, issued on October 28, reflects data submitted by pharmaceutical companies up to October 27, 2026. This comprehensive list will be updated periodically as manufacturers report new prices for non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs. The NPPA’s action follows its October 17 directive to rationalize trade margins on 137 non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs, marking a pivotal step towards ensuring that life-saving medications are accessible to a wider population.

Details of Price Reductions

This price revision has led to drastic reductions in the costs of several key anti-cancer brands. For example, RPG Life Sciences Ltd’s Fulbreca (5 ml vial) will now be priced at Rs 5,491.00, a significant drop from its original MRP of Rs 26,072.16. Similarly, Abbott Healthcare Pvt Ltd’s BEVACIZAB (4 ml vial) will be available for Rs 5,930.10, down from Rs 21,767.70.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories’ Azacytin (pack of 1) has also seen a reduction from Rs 6,337.00 to Rs 1,495.00. These reductions reflect an aggressive approach by the NPPA to alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients and align drug prices with market realities.

Political Context and Reactions

The adjustments in pricing have been welcomed by many sectors of Indian society. Prominent political commentator Mohammed Zubair shared the news on social media, underlining the importance of regular updates to MRP across India, which resonates with the ongoing discussion around healthcare accessibility.

Health activists and political leaders have long advocated for lower drug prices, positing that exorbitant costs hinder access to necessary treatments. This recent initiative by the NPPA may serve as a benchmark for future healthcare reforms, addressing longstanding concerns over pharmaceutical pricing in the country.

Why This Matters

For Indian readers, the significance of these price cuts extends beyond mere economics; they signal a government commitment to healthcare equity. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in India, and prohibitive medication costs can deter patients from pursuing treatment. By lowering these prices, the NPPA aims to enhance patient access to necessary medications, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes and improving the overall quality of life for affected individuals.
