Serena Williams Announces Comeback to Professional Tennis
New Delhi: Nearly four years after her last professional singles match at the US Open 2022, tennis icon Serena Williams has confirmed her return to the sport she has long dominated. Williams holds the record for the most Women’s singles Grand Slam titles in the Open era, having secured 23 championships during her illustrious career.
Although she suggested that the US Open 2022 might be her final tournament, Williams never officially retired, stating her intention to “evolve” away from the daily demands of competition without using the term “retirement.” The 44-year-old, who is a mother of two daughters, experienced a third-round exit in Flushing Meadows that year but is now set to return, with the Queen’s Club being her chosen venue for her comeback. She will participate in a doubles event at the London tournament.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” said Williams. “Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
The Queen’s Club, a prestigious grass court event, will take place from June 8 to June 21, serving as a preparation for Wimbledon, which begins on June 29. Williams may be granted a wild-card entry for either the doubles or singles event, depending on her preferences.
There is speculation that a return to the US Open could follow if she continues her competitive journey. Former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport commented, “It seems like she’s trying to work her way up, maybe to the U.S. Open, and those fans would be so ready to see her back on a singles court there.”
In related developments, Aryna Sabalenka, a four-time Major winner, expressed her enthusiasm about Williams’ return and hopes to face her in competition. “She’s a legend. It’s inspiring to see,” said top-ranked Sabalenka. “I’m excited to see her play and probably face her. It’s very good news for tennis.”
