Nitish Rana handed hefty fine and demerit point after heated argument with the umpire

New Delhi: In a significant development, Delhi Capitals batter Nitish Rana has received one demerit point and a 25 percent fine on his match fee following a confrontation with the fourth umpire during the closing moments of the team’s recent defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL).

The incident falls under a breach for “use of an audible obscenity during a match,” with Rana admitting to the offense and accepting the match referee’s disciplinary action. He has been found in violation of Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players.

During the match, Delhi Capitals were chasing a target of 213 runs. In the later stages of the innings, DC’s Tristan Stubbs sought permission to change his gloves, a request denied by the on-field umpires, who cited regulations designed to prevent delays in play. Despite this, Stubbs managed a commendable performance, scoring 60 runs off 38 deliveries before his dismissal. Upon returning to the pavilion, he exchanged comments with the umpire, while Nitish Rana was observed in a dispute with the fourth umpire.

Additionally, Chennai Super Kings’ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has also faced disciplinary action, receiving a fine for maintaining a slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals. This marked his team’s first offense under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, resulting in a fine of ₹12 lakh.

Following their victory over Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings secured their first win of the season. With this success, the five-time champions have climbed to ninth place in the standings, while the Kolkata Knight Riders have dropped to tenth.
