Inside the Don 3 Controversy: Unpacking the Rift Between Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh

New Delhi: The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) announced on Monday that its four lakh members will not cooperate with actor Ranveer Singh following his recent withdrawal from the much-anticipated film “Don 3.” This film has been in development for three years.

Notably, directors Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani filed a complaint against Singh with the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), which then referred the matter to FWICE for further action.

“Don 3” was set to continue the popular franchise but with a new lead after two successful installments. Although filming had not yet commenced, controversy erupted when reports indicated that Singh abandoned the project after significant preparatory work. This led to suggestions that Akhtar and Excel Entertainment might seek legal recourse due to financial losses tied to the delay.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Akhtar reflected, “I think what I have learned over the course of my life is that it’s best to expect the unexpected. Anything can happen until it really comes into your film.” He emphasized the remarkable journey of the film over the years, highlighting the contributions of various actors and partners involved since its inception.

In light of Singh’s departure, FWICE’s Ashoke Pandit stated, “This is a very serious issue, and this kind of practice is completely wrong. You cannot walk out on a project ten days prior to the beginning of shooting. First, there will be an internal discussion, and then the decision will be taken.”

Ranveer Singh’s spokesperson released a statement expressing the actor’s respect for the film industry and the people associated with the “Don” franchise. They indicated that Singh has chosen to remain silent amid ongoing developments, believing that professional matters should be addressed with dignity and respect. The spokesperson further stated that he focuses on his work and holds goodwill for all involved, emphasizing his decision to maintain a dignified stance.

“Don 3” was officially announced by Excel Entertainment in August 2023, with Singh and Kiara Advani cast in leading roles. Despite facing online backlash for succeeding Shah Rukh Khan in the franchise, Singh silenced critics with strong performances in his recent works. However, he faced challenges leading up to his exit from “Don 3,” reportedly agreeing to pay a signing amount of Rs 10 crore, yet the underlying issues remain unresolved.

While the timeline of events between November 20 and December 23 remains unclear, it is evident that a significant collaboration among key industry players has been disrupted. The anticipated film continues to generate conversations within the film community and among fans.
