The year 2024 has seen a significant surge in Qualified Institutional Placements (QIPs) in India, with ninety-one companies collectively raising a record ₹1.29 lakh crore. This amount is notably higher than the previous years, indicating a strong trend in capital raising through this route. The top 10 companies that led the QIP issuances include Vedanta, Zomato, Adani Energy Solution, Varun Beverages, Godrej Properties, PNB, Prestige Estates, JSW Energy, Samvardhana Motherson, and Adani Enterprises.

The Real Estate, Utilities, Automobiles, Metals, and PSU Banks sectors have been dominant players in the QIP market this year, contributing to a significant portion of the total issuances. QIPs are typically used by companies to raise fresh capital for expansion, debt repayment, or funding new projects. It is also a sign of confidence among promoters to raise capital for various growth initiatives.

In terms of stock performance post-QIP, more than two-thirds of the stocks have delivered positive returns compared to their issue prices. Some standout performers include Shakti Pumps, Wockhardt, Anant Raj, eMudhra, and Ganesha Ecosphere, with returns exceeding 100%. However, there are also stocks trading at a discount to their issue prices, with Vikas Lifecare, Valor Estate, Zodiac Energy, Adani Energy, and Jupiter Wagons being among the top underperformers.

Overall, the QIP trend in 2024 reflects a robust capital market scenario in India, with companies across sectors tapping into this avenue for fundraising. It will be interesting to see how this trend evolves in the coming years and its impact on the Indian corporate landscape.
