A masked gunman entered a supermarket in Virginia, fatally shooting Meghna Patel, a 47-year-old store employee originally from Gujarat, during what is believed to be a robbery attempt. Shot at close range, Patel succumbed to her injuries before any help could arrive. She had lived in the United States for a decade with her husband, Upendra Patel, and their two children.
The tragic incident, which occurred on May 23, was captured by the store’s surveillance cameras and has sparked outrage within both the Gujarati community in Virginia and in Patel’s hometown of Jantral village in Mehsana district. CCTV footage reveals the assailant entering the store, surveying the area briefly, approaching the counter, drawing a firearm from his waistband, and discharging multiple rounds before fleeing the scene. The entire incident transpired within 26 seconds.
Local police arrived promptly, securing the area for investigation. Authorities are currently reviewing the CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to ascertain the motive behind the attack. The community in Jantral, where Patel’s parents reside, is grieving her loss. Karsan Patel, her father, recounted to the Times of India that Upendra had dropped Meghna off at work just 30 minutes prior to the shooting. The couple worked at separate stores to support their family.
In a related situation, sources indicated that the assailant had shot another individual in the vicinity about an hour before the incident involving Patel. As of now, U.S. authorities have not officially released details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
