Floods Ravage Punjab: India’s Agricultural Heartland in Crisis

The aftermath of unprecedented monsoon rains has wreaked havoc in Punjab, India’s agricultural heartland, leading to widespread devastation across farmlands comparable in size to major cities like London and New York. Record rainfall surged nearly two-thirds above the average for August, resulting in floods that have claimed at least 52 lives and affected over 400,000 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a relief package of approximately $180 million to assist those impacted. In the village of Toor, survivors recount harrowing experiences of being stranded on rooftops as floodwaters rapidly rose, while local farmers like Rakesh Kumar face dire challenges in recovering their lands in time for the winter wheat crop. The situation is further complicated for landless laborers such as Mandeep Kaur, who lost her home and now sleeps under tarpaulin amid unsafe conditions. Punjab, a key supplier of rice and wheat for India’s food security program, is now confronted with additional challenges to its agricultural stability due to the floods and prior trade restrictions.
