New Delhi: The trailer for Governor highlights a pivotal figure in India’s economic history, featuring Manoj Bajpayee in a role based on the former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan, who faced one of the nation’s most significant financial crises.
In 1991, India was perilously close to a default, grappling with a severe shortage of foreign exchange reserves. It was in this critical context that Venkitaramanan undertook the challenging role of RBI Governor.
An IAS officer and economist, Venkitaramanan was appointed the 18th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in December 1990. His tenure, albeit brief at just two years, coincided with a time of substantial economic distress.
As the financial situation deteriorated, India made the unprecedented decision to leverage its gold reserves to obtain emergency loans from international banks. This strategic move garnered approximately USD 405 million, enabling the country to avert a more profound economic setback.
Although the move faced criticism and spurred debate at the time, it is now recognized as a vital step in India’s economic recovery. Venkitaramanan passed away in 2023 at the age of 92.
In discussing his role, Manoj Bajpayee characterized Venkitaramanan as a visionary willing to make difficult decisions during a time of national need. The actor noted that Venkitaramanan was not the most obvious choice for the position, but his actions played a crucial role in steering India away from financial disaster.
The film Governor, directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, aims to convey the narrative of a man whose significant contributions remain underappreciated. The project also features Adah Sharma and is produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures.
Governor is set to be released in theaters on June 12, 2026.
