W Health Ventures Secures ₹700 Crore in Latest Fund

W Health Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm specializing in healthcare, has successfully closed its second fund, achieving ₹700 crore—exceeding its initial goal of ₹630 crore. This funding will enable the firm to establish 8-10 healthcare companies over the next four years, specifically targeting the Indian market and the US-India healthcare corridor.

Innovative Company Creation Model

Based in Mumbai, W Health Ventures is distinguished by its unique “company creation” model. Unlike traditional VC firms that typically invest in existing startups, the firm’s in-house team, which includes physicians, operators, and technologists, actively identifies unaddressed needs in healthcare delivery. They spend 12-18 months assessing and eliminating risks before forming founding teams to build new companies around these identified gaps.

According to Dr. Pankaj Jethwani, managing partner of W Health Ventures, “India is at an inflection point in healthcare as the rising demand and constrained supply create a structural mismatch.” This insight highlights the growing opportunities in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the need for innovation and solutions that can address these disparities effectively.

Achievements and Future Plans

W Health Ventures has already launched two companies under the new fund. The first, Everhope Oncology, developed in partnership with Narayana Health, aims to provide coordinated, patient-centered oncology care. The second, Everbright Health, is focused on treatments for depression in the United States. With its ambitious goals, the firm states that its portfolio companies have collectively reached over 25 million patients to date.

Looking forward, W Health Ventures plans to broaden its company creation approach across India and the US-India healthcare corridor. Dr. Jethwani emphasizes their strategy: “We’re building healthcare companies that solve what stands between a billion people and better health.” This focus illustrates the firm’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare challenges in India.

What This Means

W Health Ventures’ substantial fundraising and innovative business model underscore a significant shift in the Indian healthcare landscape. As the country grapples with rising healthcare demands and inherent supply constraints, venture capital focused on creating new solutions rather than merely investing in existing companies may lead to impactful advancements. This model could catalyze the development of first-to-market solutions and improve healthcare access for millions of Indians, reflecting a robust response to the pressing healthcare issues in the country.
