New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz is preparing to enter the Indian luxury car market with the introduction of the S-Class Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). While updated petrol and diesel models of the S-Class are forthcoming, the spotlight is on the new S 450e EQ Hybrid Technology. This marks Mercedes-Benz India’s first plug-in hybrid not categorized as an AMG model, appealing to buyers interested in electric driving without completely forgoing combustion engines.
Launch Timeline
Mercedes intends to unveil the updated S-Class lineup, which includes the S 450e, between late 2026 and early 2027. The plug-in hybrid will debut alongside the standard petrol S 450 and diesel S 350d variants.
Key Features
The S 450e integrates the well-known 3.0-litre M256 Evo turbo-petrol engine from the standard S 450, enhanced with an advanced hybrid system. This combination features a 22kWh battery pack and a 120kW electric motor, resulting in a total output of 435 horsepower and 680Nm of torque—more than the standard petrol variant.
Electric Driving Capabilities
Notably, the S 450e claims a pure electric range of up to 100 kilometers. This significant feature allows owners to complete daily city commutes without consuming petrol. When long-distance travel is required, the petrol engine can seamlessly take over, offering a quieter and more environmentally friendly solution, along with the convenience of home charging.
Luxury and Comfort
The S-Class is recognized for its luxurious feel and chauffeur-friendly design, positioning the S 450e as an attractive option for buyers seeking an electric vehicle without fully transitioning to models like the EQS sedan. The S-Class is perceived as offering a more refined experience.
Performance Metrics
While the S 450e boasts higher power output, its 0-100 km/h acceleration is clocked at 5.7 seconds—slightly slower than the petrol S 450 due to the added weight of the hybrid battery. The vehicle is rear-wheel drive and weighs in at 2,465 kg; it does not feature all-wheel drive as seen in the petrol variant.
Manufacturing Location
Mercedes-Benz plans to assemble the S 450e in Chakan, Maharashtra, at the same facility that produces the regular S-Class, Maybach, and EQS models. Local assembly is expected to help maintain a competitive pricing structure.
Pricing Information
The S 450e is anticipated to be priced above the petrol and diesel models but will remain below the more luxurious Maybach S-Class.
