Maratha Reservation Protests: Unpacking the OBC Backlash and Its Consequences

OBC leader and Maharashtra Minister Chhagan Bhujbal expressed strong opposition to Maratha leader Jarange-Patil’s position on the OBC quota on November 24, 2023. Bhujbal contended that the Maratha community should not receive reservations from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, questioning the sudden emergence of documentation that purportedly identifies Marathas as Kunbi OBCs.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, known for his opposition to Jarange-Patil, claimed that the quota activist’s pressure tactics had instilled a climate of fear throughout the state, leading even the government to yield to such pressures.

This development raises significant concerns regarding the OBC backlash against the Maratha quota movement and its potential ramifications for the political landscape of Maharashtra.
