The Tamil Nadu government is set to provide affordable access to generic and other medications through the establishment of 1,000 Mudhalvar Marundhagams (Chief Minister’s Pharmacies) across the state in its initial phase.

According to the announcement, 500 of these pharmacies will be operated by cooperative societies, while the remainder will be managed by qualified entrepreneurs who are also licensed pharmacists. These 1,000 pharmacies mark the first phase of an initiative spearheaded by the Cooperation Department.

In June 2014, former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa introduced the Amma Pharmacy initiative, aimed at offering quality medications at fair prices. Initially, ten Amma Pharmacies were inaugurated in various locations across Tamil Nadu, and some of these facilities are still operational today.

Notably, the launch of the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy coincides with Jayalalithaa’s birthday, as announced by current Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

During this initial phase, nearly 1,000 Chief Minister’s Pharmacies will be opened, where medicines will be available at discounts of up to 75%. This initiative is also expected to create job opportunities for 1,500 graduates in Pharmacy (B.Pharm/D.Pharm).

In his Independence Day address last year, Stalin emphasized the high costs associated with purchasing medications from private pharmacies and proposed the opening of 1,000 Chief Minister Dispensaries to address this issue, ensuring the availability of generic and other medications at more reasonable prices.

Additionally, a subsidy of ₹1.5 lakh worth of generic medicines will be allocated to each Chief Minister’s Pharmacy operated by entrepreneurs, along with another ₹1.5 lakh worth of branded medications, surgical supplies, and various Indian medicines provided through the Tamil Nadu Consumer Cooperative Federation.

On this occasion, Chief Minister Stalin underscored the DMK government’s commitment to enhancing education and healthcare, articulating that these pharmacies aim to alleviate the financial burden on the public.
