Former US president Donald Trump has expressed his intention to introduce a reciprocal tax if elected back to power. He claimed that India imposes the highest tariffs on foreign products, but noted that they do so with a friendly demeanor. Trump emphasized on the importance of reciprocity in trade relations, highlighting that while the US generally does not charge tariffs, other countries like China, Brazil, and India have significant tariff rates.

Despite criticizing India for its high tariffs, Trump commended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a great leader who has done a remarkable job. He acknowledged the strong relationship between the US and India, pointing out that India’s tariffs, although high, are implemented in a more welcoming manner compared to other countries. Trump recalled discussions with Harley-Davidson representatives who complained about India’s steep tariffs on their motorcycles.

In a recent speech, Trump praised Modi as a “nice human being” and highlighted their good relationship. He recalled Modi’s visit to Houston for the ‘Howdy Modi’ event during his presidency, where he noted the enthusiastic reception from the crowd. Trump also mentioned offering assistance to India in dealing with threats from external sources, to which Modi responded assertively, showcasing his determination to protect India.

Overall, Trump’s remarks on India’s tariffs and his admiration for Modi demonstrate the complex dynamics of international trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
