US to levy 25% tariffs on steel, aluminium with reciprocal duties looming

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States will be imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports, including those from Canada and Mexico. He also mentioned that other import duties would be implemented later in the week.

During a press briefing on Air Force One while travelling from Florida to New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Trump stated, “Any steel entering the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff.” When asked about aluminium, he confirmed that the same tariff rate would apply.

Furthermore, Trump mentioned that he would soon announce “reciprocal tariffs,” likely on Tuesday or Wednesday. This means that the US would impose import duties on products from countries that have already imposed tariffs on American goods.

“If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” Trump emphasized.

The President’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports reflects his administration’s efforts to address trade imbalances and protect American industries. Stay tuned for further updates on the implementation of reciprocal duties in the coming days.
