In Japan, a series of taxi rides tell eerie stories of lingering trauma following the tsunami of 2011.

The city of Kamaishi in Japan was nearly wiped out by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011, which claimed the lives of almost 20,000 people. Today, local taxi drivers claim to often pick up ghostly passengers who have passed away. Riders also report seeing more and more wild deer, believed by some to be messengers between the physical world and the spiritual realm. Spending a night with Kamaishi’s taxi drivers reveals a community still haunted by its past and struggling to find closure.

Tsunami Ghosts is a documentary by Katharine Round.
