Shreyas Iyer Comments on Punjab Kings’ IPL 2026 Opener Loss: “Bowling Needed Improvement”

Punjab Kings faced their first defeat of the IPL 2026 season, losing to Rajasthan Royals by six wickets in Chandigarh. Rajasthan chased down a target of 223 runs, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal providing a strong start. However, the innings faced pressure after the departure of captain Riyan Parag, who scored 29 runs. A partnership between Donovan Ferreira and Impact Player Shubham Dubey revitalized the Royals’ innings. Ferreira contributed an impressive 52 runs off 26 balls, while Dubey supported him with 31 runs from just 12 balls, guiding Rajasthan to victory.

Following the match, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer addressed the defeat, asserting that his team had set a commendable target. Iyer expressed concern over his bowlers’ execution, particularly their ineffective use of slower balls during crucial middle overs. He acknowledged Ferreira and Dubey’s outstanding contributions. “I thought the 224 on the board was a brilliant score. Kudos to the batsmen, the way they came up and they went against the bowlers. I think it was an exceptional performance, especially on this wicket, which was a bit tacky and slow,” Iyer stated in the post-match presentation. He added, “I think we fell a bit short in our bowling, in terms of execution. We had planned to bowl a lot of slower ones, pace off, yorkers. I think we fell a bit short over there. And also, they had a tremendous partnership in the middle, especially by Ferreira and Shubham Dubey coming in and scoring those crucial runs at the end.”

Despite the loss, Punjab remains at the top of the points table, accumulating 13 points from eight matches. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals follow in second and third place, respectively, both with six wins, although Rajasthan has played one additional game. Sunrisers Hyderabad is in fourth position with eight points.
