New Delhi: The Rajasthan Royals are looking to have two of their key players, Riyan Parag and Ravindra Jadeja, back in action as they face the Mumbai Indians in a crucial match at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, May 23. The Royals’ hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs hinge on this game, as a victory would secure their place in the knockout stage, with the competition reaching its climax on the final day of the league.
Parag, the captain, missed the previous home victory against the Lucknow Super Giants due to a hamstring issue, while Jadeja has been sidelined for the last two matches. In Parag’s absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal led the team to a seven-wicket triumph against the LSG. This season has seen Parag struggle with hamstring problems, requiring him to miss the home match against the Gujarat Titans on May 9.
Jadeja Missed Two Consecutive Matches
Jadeja, the Indian all-rounder, has not played in two consecutive games this season, one against the Delhi Capitals and the other against LSG. Initially, Parag indicated that Jadeja’s absence was due to ‘workload management’; however, RR batting coach Vikram Rathour later clarified that Jadeja was dealing with a ‘niggle in his knee’ and also had an elbow concern.
Potential Returns for Jadeja and Parag
According to ESPNCricinfo, both Jadeja and Parag are expected to return for the must-win showdown against the Mumbai Indians, as they have recovered from their injuries. Jadeja participated in training before the match, where he bowled briefly and then focused on batting. Although Parag did not join the nets, he is anticipated to play and reclaim the captaincy from Jaiswal.
Playoff Qualification Scenario for RR
The situation for RR is straightforward: they must win to secure a playoff spot without relying on other results. A defeat would eliminate them, as the Punjab Kings are already ahead, and the Kolkata Knight Riders could surpass the 2008 champions by defeating the Delhi Capitals later in the day.
