The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is anticipated to elect a new national party president by March 15, as reported by various television channels on Thursday.

Nonetheless, there has yet to be any official announcement regarding the leading candidates or front-runners for the position.

The current term of party president JP Nadda is set to conclude in June 2024.

Initially, the BJP had aimed to appoint a new national president by December 2024.

At present, JP Nadda serves as the leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha and holds the portfolios of Health, Chemicals, and Fertilizers in the Modi administration.

Nadda assumed the role of working president of the BJP in 2019, before being elevated to full-time president in January 2020.

In 2023, in anticipation of the Lok Sabha Elections scheduled for May 2024, his tenure was extended for an additional three years until June 2024.

As June 2024 approaches, certain reports have suggested that BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde may be the leading candidate for the position.

However, Tawde, a former minister in the Maharashtra government and a highly influential general secretary within the BJP, found himself embroiled in controversies just before the critical assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Past Presidents of the BJP

Recently, party MLA and former Maharashtra minister Ravindra Chavan was designated as the working president of the BJP’s state unit.

Chavan (54) is a four-time MLA representing Dombivali in Thane district. He was not given a ministerial role in the newly formed BJP-led Mahayuti government.

There were speculations that he could replace Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who has taken on the role of revenue minister, as the state BJP president.
