Australia’s Mitchell Marsh Sets New T20I Records in Series Victory Over New Zealand

New Delhi: Australia captain Mitchell Marsh achieved a historic milestone while leading his team to a series victory against New Zealand. In the third and final T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on October 4, Marsh scored an impressive unbeaten 103 off 52 balls, enabling Australia to chase down a target of 157 runs.

Despite a formidable bowling performance from New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham, who claimed four wickets, Marsh’s individual brilliance shone through. The next highest contribution came from Mitchell Owen, who scored 14 runs off 10 balls. Marsh’s innings not only propelled his team to victory but also marked a significant personal achievement as he broke a record previously held by Ricky Ponting.

Marsh has become the first captain to score a T20I century in New Zealand, surpassing Ponting’s prior record of 98 not out. Additionally, Marsh is the first Australian skipper to accomplish this feat against New Zealand; Ponting had narrowly missed out on a century in the inaugural T20I match against the Kiwis in 2005.

Marsh Joins Exclusive List of Captains with Century in T20I Chases

With his century, Marsh now stands as the second captain from a full-member team to score a hundred in a T20I chase, joining Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who has achieved this milestone twice—first against South Africa in Centurion in 2021, and again against England in Karachi in 2022.

Captains with hundreds in T20I chases include:

  • 122 – Babar Azam vs. South Africa, Centurion, 2021
  • 110* – Babar Azam vs. England, Karachi, 2022

Marsh Becomes Third Australian Captain with T20I Century

Moreover, Marsh is now the third Australian captain to score a century in T20 internationals, following Aaron Finch and Shane Watson. Finch set the record for the highest individual score by an Australian captain in T20Is with 172 runs against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2018, while Watson made 124 not out as captain against India in 2016 in Sydney.

T20I hundreds by Australian captains:

  • 172 – Aaron Finch vs. Zimbabwe, Harare, 2018
  • 124* – Shane Watson vs. India, Sydney, 2016
  • 103* – Mitchell Marsh vs. New Zealand, Mount Maunganui, 2025
