India and China are actively engaging to enhance collaboration within the Brics framework, with Beijing recognizing India’s current presidency of the group. The Indian government has expressed appreciation for China’s backing of initiatives hosted by India under this mechanism.

Chinese special envoy Zhai Jun, who recently participated in a West Asia meeting, met with India’s Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Neena Malhotra in New Delhi. Zhai emphasized that as major developing nations, India and China have consistently communicated on key international and regional matters. “China values the important role played by India as the rotating Brics presidency and hopes that this Brics consultation on West Asia will send a strong message regarding the regional situation and contribute to peace and stability,” Zhai remarked.

A Chinese statement detailed Malhotra’s response, highlighting India’s recognition of China’s significant role within the Brics ecosystem. She also indicated India’s willingness to collaborate with Brics nations, including China, to promote the de-escalation of regional tensions.

Furthermore, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is anticipated to arrive in India for the upcoming Brics foreign ministers’ meeting. In a previous meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin last year, President Xi Jinping expressed China’s support for India’s presidency of Brics. Xi is expected to visit India later this year for the Brics summit, marking his first visit since the Galwan military clash in June 2020.
