Mumbai’s Struggles in IPL 2026 Continue: Bowling Unit Lacks Stability

Mumbai, India – The Mumbai Indians find themselves ninth on the IPL 2026 points table, securing only two victories out of eight matches. Despite multiple adjustments to their bowling lineup, the team has struggled to find the necessary stability, contributing significantly to their disappointing performance this season. In their last encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai posted a formidable 243 runs, only to concede 249 runs, losing by eight wickets with eight balls to spare.

Key bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, have not met expectations, while Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, who received considerable backing early in the tournament, have since been dropped from the squad.

The batting lineup is also facing challenges. Vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav has recorded just 162 runs across eight matches. Inconsistent performances from Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya have further exacerbated the situation, reflecting a lack of the necessary pedigree that has historically benefited Mumbai.

Former cricketer and JioStar expert Ian Bishop assessed the team’s underperformance, suggesting that the demands of the recent T20 World Cup may have affected the players’ physical condition. “What Jasprit Bumrah, SKY, and Arshdeep Singh from Punjab Kings put out to win that T20 World Cup must have been exhausting,” Bishop noted. He emphasized that a brief break before resuming duties for the IPL could have altered their performance.

Bishop elaborated, saying, “Ideally, I would have liked to see those guys get a few days’ break to enjoy the success they brought to the country and refresh themselves. But they came straight into the IPL, which is another business side of it.”

He pointed to Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakaravarthy as an example of how a break can aid a player’s recovery from form, stating that this approach might be effective, though he refrained from recommending it explicitly for Mumbai.

“Varun was given some time out to try to recalibrate, and it seems to have worked for him,” Bishop added, providing insight into potential recovery strategies for players in similar situations.

As IPL 2026 progresses, Mumbai will need to address both their bowling complications and batting inconsistencies effectively to revitalize their campaign.
