Apple AirTags: Growing Concerns Over Vehicle Tracking Abuse

Apple AirTags, small tracking devices gaining popularity in Canada for personal item tracking, have increasingly become tools for criminals. Police have issued warnings about their use in vehicle thefts, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and preventative measures.

The Current Situation of Vehicle Theft Involving AirTags

In recent months, multiple police forces across Canada have intensified their warnings about the misuse of AirTags and similar tracking devices in car thefts. On August 20, 2026, Halton Regional Police arrested Darryl Davance, a 25-year-old from Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, who allegedly used these devices to track and steal over a dozen vehicles in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Investigators executed search warrants linked to Davance’s case, uncovering connections to 14 stolen Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Police also released video evidence showing him placing a tracker under a vehicle at Sherway Gardens, highlighting the sophisticated techniques criminals are employing.

Criminal Tactics and Locations for Device Placement

Criminals often deploy tracking devices in highly populated areas such as shopping malls and hotel parking lots. They discreetly attach these devices in locations like under trailer hitches, wheel wells, and bumpers, then monitor the vehicles’ movements through unassuming apps. This method allows them to determine opportune moments for theft, targeting vehicles parked away from the watchful eyes of security and potential witnesses.

Halton police have underscored that such incidents have been reported not only in the GTHA but also in cities including Barrie, Calgary, and Saskatoon. An August 12 statement from the Waterloo Regional Police Service accentuated the alarming rise of “unidentified trackers” being placed on vehicles without the owners’ knowledge, urging the public to remain vigilant.

Preventative Measures and Public Awareness

In light of these alarming trends, police urge vehicle owners to adopt proactive behaviors. They recommend that car owners perform routine checks for unfamiliar devices, utilize apps designed to detect third-party trackers, and enable their vehicle’s video-recording features while parked. These measures can serve as a deterrent to potential thieves.

Both Apple and Android platforms now include built-in features aimed at detecting unwanted location trackers. In 2024, a joint initiative titled “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” was launched, providing alerts to users if devices like AirTags are unknowingly tracking them. When such a device is detected, users receive notifications indicating the presence of tracking devices in their vicinity.

Why It Matters

The misuse of tracking devices like AirTags is not only a pressing issue for personal security but also raises significant concerns regarding privacy and individual rights. For the AI and tech industries, this situation highlights the critical need for the development of more robust security measures and protocols surrounding tracking technologies. As consumers become increasingly aware of their vulnerabilities, there is a potential for increased demand for security solutions that assess and mitigate these risks effectively. Moreover, regulatory bodies may need to step in to establish guidelines governing the sale and use of tracking devices to protect citizens from criminal exploitation.
