Global Standard collaborates with natural fibre coalition

Global Standard, the non-profit organization behind the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), has recently joined the “Make the Label Count” coalition, which consists of international natural fiber producers, manufacturers, brands, standards, and environmental groups. The goal of this coalition is to combat greenwashing and empower consumers to make informed decisions about the clothes and textiles they purchase. By joining forces with the coalition, Global Standard aims to ensure that textile sustainability claims in the EU are credible and transparent.

According to Marie-Luise Pörtner, Global Regulations Specialist at Global Standard, the GOTS label, which is backed by over 16,000 certified facilities, is a testament to businesses’ commitment to sustainability and consumers’ desire for environmentally friendly textiles with accurate and credible labels and claims.

The “Make the Label Count” initiative, launched in 2021, is advocating for a revision of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology for textiles. The current PEF methodology assesses a product’s environmental impact to provide consumers with information on its sustainability. However, there are limitations to the current PEF methodology, such as different system boundaries for textiles made from natural and synthetic fibers and the exclusion of microplastics and plastic waste. This could potentially lead to the legitimization of unsustainable consumption with an EU-backed green claim.

Global Standard will bring its expertise and leadership to the coalition, ensuring that voices from all segments of the value chain are heard in advocating for a more robust and comprehensive PEF methodology for textiles. Through transparent and fair practices, the coalition aims to create a more sustainable system of textile production and consumption for the benefit of consumers and the environment.
