The Election Commission has directed presiding officers at all polling booths, particularly in West Bengal, to ensure that all candidate buttons on electronic voting machines (EVMs) are clearly visible. They must check that these buttons are not obscured by tape, glue, or any other substances, including color, ink, perfume, or chemicals that could jeopardize the secrecy of the ballot.

Instances where candidate buttons are found compromised may be categorized as tampering or interference with EVMs, which constitutes an electoral offense. Election Commission officials stated that the commission is prepared to take criminal action or mandate a repoll if such issues arise.

In situations where tampering is detected, it is imperative for the presiding officer to report the matter immediately to the sector officer or returning officer.
