Cattle Transporters Attacked by Cow Vigilantes in Jalna: Seven Injured

In a disturbing incident late Monday night, a group of unidentified assailants reportedly attacked seven individuals, including a 62-year-old man, who were transporting cattle from a weekly market. The Tehsil Police in Jalna registered a case against 10 to 20 unidentified persons following the assault.

According to police sources, the complainant, aged 62, alleged that his employer, trader Padam Rajput of Borgaon Wadi in Sillod tehsil, had acquired 21 bulls at the Wadod Bazaar in Phulambri tehsil. The cattle were being transported in two vehicles—MH-20 EL 7887 and KA 51 DA 4363—toward Nalegaon in Chakur tehsil, Latur district.

As the vehicles approached Londewadi village in Jalna tehsil, the group intercepted them, accusing the transporters of intending to slaughter the animals. The victims explained that the cattle were intended for agricultural use and presented valid purchase documents, but they were reportedly attacked with sticks and logs.

Police arrived at the scene to rescue the injured and seize the cattle, which were later transferred to a nearby cow shelter in Ramnagar. However, according to the complaint, the assailants followed the victims to the shelter and continued their aggression, in the presence of police officers.

Social worker Reema Kale-Kharat intervened, pressing authorities to record the victims’ complaint. She claimed that instead of addressing the attackers, police initially detained the victims and wrongfully registered a case against them under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Following her insistence, police subsequently registered a case against the assailants.

The injured individuals were identified as Nisar Patel, Asif Shaikh, Riyaz Qureshi, Sajid Pasha, Asif Sadiq, Javed Qureshi, and Sayyed Parvez, all sustaining injuries primarily to their heads and other body areas.

Complainant Nisar Patel stated that the attackers arrived in a Scorpio vehicle and continued their assault at the cow shelter. “How can the police register a case against unidentified persons when we clearly saw who attacked us?” he questioned. Patel also alleged that police initially refused to take his complaint and detained them for nearly 12 hours before finally addressing the situation.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anant Kulkarni denied that the assault took place in front of police. “There was some dispute between the two parties, and we are investigating the matter,” he said.

The Federation of Maharashtra Muslims (FMM) Jalna unit condemned the incident, demanding that the assailants face prosecution. FMM convenor Safir Ahmed noted that in August 2025, the Maharashtra Police issued a directive stating that only police have the authority to act against unauthorized transportation of animals. The order explicitly prohibits private individuals from stopping vehicles carrying cattle. Ahmed also highlighted that such vigilante actions persist despite official directives intended to protect livestock transporters.
