Bihar Politics Poetic: Seat-Sharing Talks in INDIA Bloc Intensify

NEW DELHI: The ongoing negotiations over seat-sharing within the Bihar coalition, known as the Mahagathbandhan, have been marked by a continual struggle among parties seeking to maximize their share. Within the RJD-led alliance, member parties are maneuvering between aspirations and electoral arithmetic, each aiming to secure the best possible outcome before closing a deal.

Tension is not confined to political maneuvering; rather, it has a poetic dimension, as illustrated by the exchange of shayaris between RJD’s Manoj Jha and Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi, which highlighted the underlying discord. Following a meeting between RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding the seat-sharing arrangement, Manoj Jha posted on social media: “Rahiman dhaaga prem ka, mat todo chhitkaay, toote se phir na mile, mile gaanth parijaay.” This translates to “Do not snap the thread of love, Rahim says — once broken, it may be tied again, but the knot will always remain.”

In response, Imran Pratapgarhi remarked: “Paani aankh mein bhar kar laaya ja sakta hai, Ab bhi jalta shehar bachaya ja sakta hai,” indicating that even in difficult situations, hope for resolution remains. This exchange raised questions about the unity of the Mahagathbandhan and whether its partners are preparing to pursue their individual interests.

Despite numerous discussions among the Congress, RJD, and Left leaders, a consensus on seat allocation in the INDIA alliance remains elusive. An RJD official indicated that a finalization of seat-sharing could occur within days, potentially accompanied by the announcement of candidates and a joint manifesto.

Bihar Congress coordinator Krishna Allavaru expressed a cautious optimism, stating, “Seat distribution is being finalized. The list of candidates will be released soon. Our effort is to form a good government for the people of Bihar so that the alliance is not harmed and Bihar benefits.” Historical performance suggests the Congress might have a diminished share this time; in the 2020 elections, it won only 19 seats out of 70 contested, while the RJD secured 75 out of 144.

Additionally, the Congress convened its Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting in New Delhi to refine its strategy for Bihar, attended by senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Rajesh Ram, a Congress leader, noted that positive discussions took place, hinting at an upcoming meeting with Tejashwi Yadav.

Regarding the VIP party led by Mukesh Sahni, reports suggest that it has been offered 18 seats by the RJD, with 10 candidates expected to run on the VIP symbol. The RJD is proactively encouraging its potential candidates to initiate nomination processes ahead of the first phase of polling, aiming to avoid any last-minute chaos.
