The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of around ₹3,600 crore to boost renewable energy capacity and enhance energy security in Assam. This initiative is crucial to meet the increasing energy demand and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, as stated by ADB.

The Assam Solar Project aims to develop a renewable energy roadmap for the state and increase solar energy capacity to reach a target of 3,000 MW by 2030. A 500 MW grid-connected solar PV facility will be constructed in the Karbi Anglong district, along with a grid-connected battery energy storage system to ensure grid stability and meet peak power demand.

With ADB’s assistance, private sector investment in renewable energy will be encouraged through strengthening the state’s public-private partnership framework. Additionally, a PPP agreement will be established to develop an additional 250 MW solar PV facility in the Karbi Anglong district.

Furthermore, the project will upgrade electricity distribution in the surrounding rural areas by replacing overhead power distribution lines with aerial covered conductor cable and installing new distribution transformers. ADB will also provide a technical assistance grant to support project implementation, awareness-raising, and capacity building of the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited and the local communities.

ADB’s goal is to create a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia-Pacific region while working towards eradicating extreme poverty. The bank, established in 1966, is owned by 69 members, with 49 from the Asia-Pacific region.
