Indian equity markets remained under pressure in volatile trade on Tuesday, with escalating US-Iran tensions, elevated crude oil prices and renewed foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling dampening investor sentiment.

At 2 pm, Sensex traded 496.69 pts or 0.64% lower at 77,119.71; and Nifty 50 was down 145.80 pts or 0.60% to 24,065.20.

Brent crude hovered around $85 a barrel, fuelling concerns over inflation and corporate margins. While Asian markets traded marginally higher after Wall Street’s sharp overnight decline, investors remained cautious amid persistent geopolitical uncertainty.

Market participants were also tracking reports of suspected Covid-related deaths in Andhra Pradesh, which have prompted heightened vigilance in the state.

June retail inflation stood at 4.38 per cent, remaining within the Reserve Bank of India’s tolerance band. However, analysts said persistent price pressures underscore the need for prudent monetary policy, efficient supply chains and continued vigilance on inflation.

Despite the weak start for benchmark indices, analysts expect stock-specific opportunities to continue, supported by the broader market’s relative strength, particularly in the mid-cap and small-cap segments.
