India Captain Harmanpreet Kaur Sets New T20I Record Despite Loss to South Africa

In the third T20I match against South Africa in Johannesburg, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur played a pivotal innings, scoring 66 runs off 38 balls. Opener Shafali Verma contributed an impressive 64 runs, while Smriti Mandhana added 37, helping India set a total of 192 runs in their first innings. However, South African captain Laura Wolvaardt dominated the chase with a remarkable 115 runs, leading her team to a nine-wicket victory.

Harmanpreet’s half-century not only helped India put up a strong score but also allowed her to achieve a new world record for the most runs scored as a captain in women’s T20 internationals. With her 66-run performance, she has surpassed Chamari Athapaththu, now amassing 3,017 runs in this format. Athapaththu falls just short with 3,016 runs, while former Australia captain Meg Lanning is third on the list with 2,619 runs.

Most Runs as Captain in Women’s T20Is:

Captains Runs
Harmanpreet Kaur 3017
Chamari Athapaththu 3016
Meg Lanning 2619
Charlotte Edwards 2529
Suzie Bates 2236

As India trails 3-0 in the five-match series against South Africa, concerns grow with less than two months remaining before the T20 World Cup 2026. While players like Harmanpreet and Shafali Verma have shown promise, others including Smriti Mandhana must regain their form to avoid further setbacks.

The bowling unit may also require adjustments, as Renuka Singh Thakur has not met expectations, and Deepti Sharma’s expensive bowling has raised alarms. Shreyanka Patil stands out as the only bowler to have performed well thus far, which bolsters her confidence heading into the major tournament. Time is of the essence for the rest of the squad to improve their performances ahead of the upcoming challenge.
