The Coal Ministry is set to launch the 15th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions on April 17, 2026, in Mumbai, with Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, serving as the Chief Guest.
This initiative demonstrates the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting India’s growing energy demands and advancing the vision of a self-reliant nation. It builds on the success of previous commercial coal mine auctions and aims to enhance India’s energy landscape with an increased focus on growth, efficiency, and self-reliance.
Since the inception of commercial coal mining in 2020, this initiative has significantly improved domestic coal availability and bolstered the nation’s energy security. The upcoming auction will introduce a fresh set of fully explored and partially explored coal blocks, inviting participation from experienced miners, new entrants, and technology-driven enterprises.
The Ministry emphasizes that this round aims to invigorate the coal sector by fostering a vibrant and competitive ecosystem, which will lead to enhanced investments, job generation, and overall growth in the sector.
In the previous 13 rounds of commercial coal mine auctions, a total of 136 blocks were allotted to successful bidders, with approximately 117 blocks awarded to the private sector.
The auctions utilize a two-stage online bidding process. This involves an initial technical screening followed by the submission of competitive price offers in the first stage, and a second stage designed for receiving improved price offers.
The importance of these auctions is underscored by India’s rising consumption of coal, particularly driven by the power sector and various industries. The Ministry has set a domestic coal production target of around 1.5 billion tonnes by FY30.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India’s initiative to expand commercial coal mining is leading to a revival in coal supply jobs, with an estimated increase of 74,000 positions expected in 2024, a trend anticipated to continue in the future.
