PSU Bank Stocks Rally as Sensex and Nifty Struggle in Volatile Session

Equity benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session after a steady start on Friday amid lack of positive triggers. Sensex witnessed over 660 points intraday fall and Nifty 50 declined nearly 190 points.

Sensex traded 191.44 points or 0.23 per cent lower at 84,213.02 at 1.05 pm, and Nifty 50 dropped by 66.65 points or 0.26 per cent to 25,811.20.

Both the midcap and smallcap indices ended the session on a flat note. Among sectoral indices, most traded in negative territory, with notable weakness in metal, media, private banking, and IT stocks.

On the other hand, the PSU Bank index outperformed, rising over 2 per cent, while auto, FMCG, and oil & gas indices registered modest gains.

Top gainers & losers today

Eicher Motors, L&T, TCS, Bajaj Auto, Coal India and SBI traded as major gainers of Nifty 50 pack, while Cipla, Eternal, NTPC, Max Healrh and IndiGo emerged as major laggards.

A total of 3,035 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing, of which 1,280 stocks advanced, 1,651 declined, and 104 remained unchanged, indicating a slightly negative market breadth. Meanwhile, 59 stocks (including Aditya Birla Capital, Canara Bank, IDBI First Bank, Indian Bank, PB Fintech) touched their 52-week high, whereas 35 stocks hit their 52-week low. Additionally, 52 stocks were locked in the upper circuit, while 30 stocks hit the lower circuit.

PSU bank stocks lift midcap

Midcap stocks Union Bank, IDFC First Bank, Aurobindo Pharma, Yes Bank and Bank of India gained 3-6 per cent, while Motilal OFS, Mphasis, Dabur, 360 ONE WAM and Fortis fell 2-6 per cent.

Smallcap stocks Navin Fluorine, IKS, MRPL, Welspun Corp, Star Health and GE Ship zoomed 3-14 per cent, while Bandhan Bank, Devyani International, Sagility, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Shyam Metalics dragged 3-7 per cent.

Swiggy, Dabur, Cipla, Navin Fluorine and Canara Bank shares react to Q2 numbers. ACC, Bajaj Electricals, Bank of Baroda, Bharat Electronics, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Maruti Suzuki India, Medplus Health Services, NOCIL, Northern Arc Capital, Patanjali Foods, Shriram Finance, Vedanta and Zensar Technologies to announce Q2 results today.
