Benchmark indices continued their festive-season rally into the afternoon session on Tuesday, with the Sensex gaining 379.73 points to reach 82,169.85, and the Nifty 50 climbing 95.90 points to 25,173.55 as of 1:35 PM.

The indices opened slightly higher at 81,883.95 and 25,085.30 respectively, building on the momentum from Monday’s trading despite ongoing foreign institutional investor outflows.

Financial sector stocks were the primary contributors to this upward trend. The Nifty Financial Services index increased by 169.50 points or 0.63% to 26,889.20, while the Nifty Bank index rose 323 points or 0.58% to 56,427.85.

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel emerged as the leading gainer on the Nifty 50, rising 1.99% to ₹1,940.90, closely followed by Jio Financial Services, which climbed 1.65% to ₹311.30. Eicher Motors increased by 1.57% to ₹6,988, and both HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank contributed noticeably to the index’s gains with rises of 1.41% to ₹987.20 and 1.17% to ₹1,379.30, respectively.

Conversely, retail and automobile stocks experienced selling pressure. Trent saw a significant decline of 1.97% to ₹4,683.20, making it the largest laggard, while Tata Motors fell 1.86% to ₹699.40. Axis Bank decreased by 1.57% to ₹1,193.80, and Tata Consumer Products shed 1.19% to ₹1,128.50. Hindalco also lost 1.16%, trading at ₹767.70.

Market breadth was mixed, with 1,841 stocks advancing and 2,196 declining on the BSE, alongside 165 stocks remaining unchanged out of a total of 4,202 traded issues. A total of 160 stocks reached their 52-week highs, while 112 hit 52-week lows. Circuit breakers were triggered on 223 stocks on the upside and 163 on the downside.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index saw an increase of 205.40 points or 0.35% to 58,231.15, and the Nifty Next 50 rose marginally by 18.55 points or 0.03% to 68,623.65. Analysts attributed the continued strength in the market to festive-season optimism and robust domestic institutional buying, which mitigated foreign selling amounting to ₹313 crore on October 6, complemented by strong inflows totaling ₹5,036 crore.
