Lok Sabha MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur addressed students at the Kullhad Economy Fest (KEF) hosted by IIT Mandi on Friday. He emphasized the importance of youth in propelling India’s startup ecosystem, spearheading digital transformation, and fostering local economic development through entrepreneurship.

Speaking as the chief guest, Thakur noted the remarkable growth of India’s startup landscape, stating that the number of startups had surged from 350 to over 159,000, with 127 achieving unicorn status. He underscored India’s leadership in digital payments, highlighting platforms like UPI and BHIM, and connected these advancements to broader national initiatives such as “Make in India.”

Thakur encouraged students to innovate with technology for the benefit of rural areas and small businesses. “Think about how you can take technology to the village level,” he urged, advocating for solutions focused on branding, marketing, and sustainability that align with the “Vocal for Local” campaign.

In his address, Thakur also referenced India’s significant achievements in space exploration, its rich cultural heritage, and the ongoing relevance of swadeshi (indigenous) manufacturing. He pointed out that initiatives like GST reform and programs such as “Mera Yuva Bharat” aim to engage young Indians in the national development narrative.

IIT Mandi Director Professor Laxmidhar Behera, along with event convener Professor Ajay Chaturvedi and the student body, welcomed Thakur’s message of innovation and national service.

The Kullhad Economy Fest focuses on entrepreneurship, sustainability, and local culture, combining academic discussions with themes pertinent to economic development.
