Belarus and Russia Hold Joint Military Drills Amid Rising NATO Tensions

Russia recently demonstrated its advanced weaponry during joint military exercises with Belarusian forces amid escalating tensions with NATO nations. Approximately 7,000 troops, including 6,000 from Belarus, participated in the exercises conducted at various locations in Belarus and Russia. Notably, a Kalibr missile was launched from the Russian nuclear submarine Arkhangelsk in the Barents Sea as part of the drills, which officials from both nations characterized as defensive and intended to simulate a response to potential invasions. In light of alleged incursions by Russian drones into Polish airspace, NATO countries have heightened their security measures, with Poland warning of increased risks of open conflict in Europe. Meanwhile, Belarus’s Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin downplayed NATO’s concerns, asserting that the drills were not a threat. The exercises also involved rare media access, allowing foreign journalists and U.S. military representatives to observe the activities, which included a display of armored vehicles and aerial maneuvers.
