Israel’s Attack on Qatar Signals Rejection of Gaza Ceasefire Efforts

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently refrained from agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza, despite a deal in November 2023 that led to the release of 110 captives from Hamas’s October 7 attack. Following this, Netanyahu declined to extend the ceasefire, leaving many captives still in Gaza. Attempts at negotiating a ceasefire have faltered as Netanyahu repeatedly shifted conditions, including the demand for permanent Israeli control over the Philadelphi Corridor and the insistence on securing all captives without a ceasefire in return. Despite international pressure and proposals from allies, including the United States, Netanyahu’s government has unilaterally violated ceasefire agreements and impeded negotiations. The situation remains fluid as Netanyahu balances maintaining political support from far-right factions within his coalition and grappling with ongoing legal challenges. This protraction in military conflict has led to significant suffering among Palestinians in Gaza.
