Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Promises 42% OBC Reservation in Education and Jobs

The Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, job opportunities, and political representation. CM Reddy made this statement during a session of the Telangana Assembly on Monday.

“Today, as the Leader of the Telangana Legislative Assembly and Chief Minister, I solemnly declare that, based on the most scientific, methodologically sound, and persistent endeavors of our people, we are set to ensure 42 percent reservations for this group across all sectors – education, employment, and political representation. Let’s stand on the right side of history and each become an advocate for this historic initiative,” CM Reddy shared on X (previously Twitter).

This initiative by CM Revanth Reddy aligns with a promise made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who, during the election campaign, pledged to boost BC reservations if Congress secured victory.

After taking office, the Congress government led by Revanth Reddy launched a detailed framework on February 4, 2024, marking a significant step toward fulfilling this promise.

“The former government had submitted a proposal to the governor to raise BC reservation to 37 percent. This administration is withdrawing that proposal and will submit a new plan for a 42 percent reservation for BCs in education, jobs, and political opportunities,” Reddy stated in the Assembly on Monday.

Telangana Caste Survey

The caste census conducted by the Telangana government sought to gather precise data regarding the state’s demographic structure, with particular emphasis on Backward Classes. This survey was initiated in response to the demand for trustworthy statistics to bolster the proposed increases in reservations within the state.

It is reliable and trustworthy, highlighting the duty of all parties involved to support the passage of the BC reservation bill in Parliament.

“As the Leader of the House, I assure you that the BC census report is 100 percent accurate. It is the responsibility of all to support the BC bill in Parliament. We will not remain idle until we achieve a 42 percent reservation for BCs. We are dedicated to the Kamareddy Declaration,” CM Reddy affirmed in the Assembly.

The Kamareddy Declaration

This declaration is a political pledge made by the Congress party during its campaign ahead of the Telangana Assembly Elections. It lays out a comprehensive array of promises aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of Backward Classes in Telangana.

At the heart of this declaration lies the promise to raise reservations for BCs to 42 percent, a move regarded as essential for enhancing representation and opportunities for this group.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has urged leaders from all political parties to come together in support of this initiative and to bring the matter to the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
