PM Modi on Lex Fridman: India’s Crucial Role in AI Development

In a conversation with MIT scientist and American podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that regardless of global advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), progress will remain unfulfilled without India’s involvement.

This statement was made in reply to Fridman’s inquiry about how India, which he noted is trailing behind the US, can rise to prominence in the AI domain.

PM Modi expanded on his thoughts, emphasizing, “I firmly believe that AI advancement is inherently a collaborative effort. All participants uplift each other through shared insights and experiences.”

He further stressed that India is not merely constructing theoretical AI frameworks but is actively developing AI solutions tailored for specific applications, providing GPU access universally.

“We have devised a distinctive marketplace-driven approach to guarantee widespread access. A significant transformation in mindset is underway in India, although historical constraints, outdated governmental practices, and insufficient supporting infrastructure have given us the appearance of lagging behind others,” Modi articulated in the podcast.

He also mentioned India’s advancements in the rollout of 5G technology.

“Initially, the world thought we were significantly behind; however, once we commenced, we quickly became the fastest nation globally to implement extensive 5G networks. A recent visit by a US corporate executive highlighted this fact. He informed me that if I were to recruit engineers in the US, I would only attract enough candidates to fill a single room. Conversely, if I advertised the same position in India, even a football field would potentially be insufficient to accommodate the applicants,” Modi noted.

He underscored that this situation illustrates India’s immense talent pool, which he referred to as the nation’s “greatest asset.”

“Ultimately, artificial intelligence is fundamentally fueled, shaped, and directed by human intelligence. Without authentic human intellect, AI cannot flourish or evolve sustainably, and that real intelligence abundantly resides within India’s youth and talent pool, which I consider our most valuable resource,” PM Modi conveyed to Fridman.
