When to Expect the Announcement of Delhi’s New Chief Minister and the Election Process Explained

When will the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveil Delhi’s next chief minister? As anticipation builds regarding the new CM’s identity, rumors suggest that any significant shifts in Delhi’s political landscape might occur after the conclusion of Parliament’s Budget session and upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his international trip.

Previously, the BJP’s successful candidate from Delhi mentioned that the party’s central leadership will determine who will be the chief minister. He emphasized that Delhi holds “immense significance, and whoever is chosen will be the CM.”

What is the process for electing a CM?

There’s a detailed procedure. Here’s what will transpire after the BJP’s victory in the Delhi Elections 2025:

Step 1: The BJP will first appoint observers. Generally, the BJP releases a press notice announcing the observers, who are members of the central team.

Step 2: Observers will subsequently meet with the MLAs.

Step 3: Vidhan Mandal Meeting or gathering: Observers will convene with MLAs to appoint a leader.

Step 4: The new chief minister will be declared.

This entire process is expected to span at least a week.

Furthermore, there are whispers in political circles that the legislature party’s meeting could take place following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his trip to France and the United States.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit the US on February 12-13 at the invitation of US officials. The Budget session of Parliament will also wrap up on February 13.

Who is favored to become Delhi’s CM?

The BJP, ending a more than 26-year absence from power, captured 48 seats in the recent elections for the 70-member assembly, pushing the AAP to a distant second with 22 seats.

Reportedly, a chief minister could be selected from among the newly elected party MLAs, as “all 48 MLAs are perceived as equal within the party, making any one of them a potential CM,” stated BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

A BJP source told the news agency PTI that the party might look at selecting an MLA with a ‘Purvanchal’ background, based on the political dynamics influencing the top leadership’s decisions.

“Historical precedents, including in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in 2023, as well as Odisha last year, leave little room for speculation on these selections,” he was quoted as saying.

In previous instances, the BJP has favored new and relatively obscure figures for the chief minister role. For instance, the party appointed Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh, Bhajanlal Sharma in Rajasthan, Vishnu Deo Sai in Chhattisgarh, Pushkar Singh Dhami in Uttarakhand, and Mohan Charan Majhi in Odisha.
