Understanding the Balance: Centre vs. State Authority on Water Resources Management

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 7 to address the ongoing Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) dispute between Punjab and Haryana. Kejriwal emphasized that it is the federal government’s responsibility to ensure access to water for both states, stating, “It’s the duty of the Centre to ensure water for Punjab and Haryana, not to make them fight.”

During a press conference in Hisar, Haryana, Kejriwal criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for inconsistency in its stance on the issue. He remarked, “What’s the stand of the Congress and the BJP in Punjab and Haryana? In Punjab, they say we will not let the SYL canal be constructed. In Haryana, they say we will take SYL waters at any cost. These people do dirty politics.”

The SYL canal issue has been a source of contention between the two states for decades, with both sides claiming rights to the river waters involved.
