TVK Breaks Decades of DMK-AIADMK Rule as Actor Vijay Becomes Tamil Nadu’s New Chief Minister

TVK Chief C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 following a verdict on May 4 that declared his party the single largest in the assembly. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.

The newly appointed chief minister faced challenges in demonstrating a majority to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Following his inauguration, the governor instructed Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the assembly by May 13.

Vijay’s party, TVK, made significant gains in the elections, overcoming the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu politics.

He succeeded MK Stalin in this role. Additional support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was crucial, providing VWK with the necessary backing to achieve a majority of 120 in the 234-member assembly. This followed prior endorsements from Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), which had already raised TVK’s tally from 107 to 116 by Friday night. With the inclusion of VCK and IUML, the total rose to 120.
