New Delhi: The French Open draw has dramatically altered following the surprising exits of Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. Djokovic faced a third-round defeat against Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, with scores of 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5, ending his pursuit of a 25th major championship. Sinner fell in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, with a scoreline of 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

Entering the tournament, Djokovic had experienced limited clay-court competition. He successfully navigated his initial matches, overcoming Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round and Valentin Royer in the second, both of which were four-set encounters. However, he led Fonseca by two sets before being defeated, marking the first time since 2009 that Djokovic did not advance to the quarterfinals at the French Open.

French Open to Crown New Champion

With all past Grand Slam winners eliminated from the tournament, a new champion will be declared at Roland Garros. Following Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal, Djokovic (24 titles), Sinner (4), Stan Wawrinka (3), and Marin Cilic (1) were the only Grand Slam champions remaining. Now, only three finalists are left: Alexander Zverev (3 finals), Casper Ruud (3 finals), and Matteo Berrettini (1), ensuring a new winner will emerge.

Potential Contenders for the 2026 French Open Title

The unexpected results have opened opportunities for several other players. Despite Zverev, Ruud, and Berrettini being the only remaining finalists, other players could also seize the moment for a surprise victory.

  1. Alexander Zverev: As the highest-ranked seed after Sinner’s exit, Zverev, the second seed, reached the final in 2024, ultimately losing to Carlos Alcaraz with a scoreline of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. He is recognized as one of the top active players without a Grand Slam title, having finished as a runner-up at both the Australian Open and the US Open.

  2. Casper Ruud: Another prime contender is Norway’s Casper Ruud, the 15th seed, renowned for his clay-court prowess. He reached the finals in 2022 and 2023, succumbing to Rafael Nadal and Djokovic, respectively. Ruud progressed by defeating Tommy Paul from the USA in the third round and will face Joao Fonseca, who recently defeated Djokovic.

  3. Rafael Jodar: Emerging Spanish talent Rafael Jodar, a 19-year-old who surged to 29th in the ATP rankings after starting March outside the top 100, is also making an impact. He has advanced to the fourth round and will compete against Pablo Carreno Busta. Jodar has an impressive clay-court record, winning 18 of his last 21 matches.
