Sudanese military successfully repels rebels in Omdurman’s second city

Sudan’s military forces have reportedly made significant advances into Omdurman, the country’s second-largest city, seizing control of areas previously held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting in the city has been intense, with the army now in control of Mansoura, Murabaat, and Elfitihab, according to reports.

This latest development marks a new phase in the conflict that began in April 2023, with the focus of the fighting shifting to Khartoum and parts of Darfur. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the displacement of millions.

Reports indicate that RSF fighters have been using drones in an attempt to counter the military’s advances. The Sudan Tribune also confirmed the army’s progress, noting the release of three army officers who had been held captive.

In addition to seizing RSF territories, government soldiers have taken control of weapons and ammunition depots, as well as storage facilities holding essential supplies. A senior military official reported that a special operation resulted in the deaths of several RSF fighters, including a commander.

The military gains come amidst international condemnation of the RSF, with the United States declaring the group guilty of genocide and imposing sanctions on its leader, Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. Both the RSF and government forces have been accused of committing atrocities and war crimes.

The ongoing conflict has ravaged Sudan, pushing the country towards famine and resulting in the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. The situation remains dire, with millions of people suffering the devastating consequences of the war.
