Law enforcement authorities in Nashville, Tennessee, have reported that a 17-year-old suspect shot and killed a female high school student before taking his own life.

The incident took place at Antioch High School and resulted in two other individuals being injured. Governor Bill Lee expressed his gratitude towards law enforcement and first responders for their quick response and ongoing investigation. He also asked for prayers for the victims, their families, and the school community.

The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) spokesperson Don Aaron.

Parents were urged not to go to the school, which is located about 16 kilometers southeast of downtown Nashville. Instead, they were advised to pick up their loved ones from a nearby medical facility.

Gun violence remains a significant issue in the US, with school shootings being a persistent problem. The Washington Post’s database shows that there have been 426 school shootings in the US since 1999, when the Columbine High School massacre occurred.

The MNPD stated that the attack at Antioch High School started at 11:09 am local time. The suspect fired multiple shots in the school cafeteria before turning the gun on himself. Along with the teenage girl who tragically lost her life, one student was injured and another was grazed on the arm.

Two school resource officers were present at the school but were in a different part of the building when the shooting began. By the time they arrived, the shooting had already ended, and the suspect was deceased.

Following the incident, President Donald Trump extended his condolences to the affected families and survivors, stating that the White House is closely monitoring the situation.

This is not the first time Nashville has faced such a tragedy in recent years. In 2023, an attacker killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School. In response, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill allowing some teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons on public school campuses. However, critics have raised concerns about the effectiveness of this measure given the loosened gun restrictions in the state.
