SRH Topple PBKS in IPL 2026 Standings Despite Connolly’s Unforgettable Century

New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad capitalized on Punjab Kings’ fielding mistakes, securing a 33-run victory in the 49th match of the 2026 Indian Premier League. Led by Pat Cummins, SRH amassed a formidable total of 235/4, benefiting from numerous dropped catches by PBKS. Despite Cooper Connolly’s historic century, SRH’s bowlers maintained control throughout the match.

Historically, SRH has been successful when posting totals exceeding 220, having won all ten previous encounters, and they upheld this trend. The Sunrisers bowlers were effective, with their fielding outperforming that of PBKS, which suffered significant lapses.

SRH Bowlers Strike Early

Cummins initiated the proceedings by dismissing Priyansh Arya on the first ball, a catch executed brilliantly by Eshan Malinga at deep square leg. Nitish Reddy followed suit, taking out Prabhsimran Singh on the first ball of the next over, with Cummins again delivering a standout catch while running backward from cover. Malinga soon removed Shreyas Iyer, further complicating PBKS’s chase.

Though Connolly and Marcus Stoinis provided some resistance for the fourth wicket, their partnership was short-lived, with Stoinis falling to Shivang Kumar. PBKS continued to lose wickets without significant contributions from the rest of the batting lineup.

Connolly Shines with Record-Breaking Century

In an impressive showcase, Connolly delivered a record-breaking century, becoming the youngest overseas player to score a hundred in the Indian Premier League at 22 years and 257 days old. While his teammates struggled, Connolly fought valiantly, finishing with an unbeaten 107 off 59 deliveries, attempting to narrow the defeat.

PBKS’ Fielding Errors Prove Costly

Despite Connolly’s efforts, PBKS endured several crucial fielding errors, dropping a total of three catches. First, Connolly himself let an easy catch slip during the eighth over off Lockie Ferguson, failing to hold onto a simple opportunity presented by Ishan Kishan. Shashank Singh followed, dropping another catch from Heinrich Klaasen’s slog sweep. This came amid a streak of poor fielding, including three dropped catches against LSG and one against DC in previous matches.

Chahal expressed disbelief as the errors piled up, and Ferguson also failed to grasp a straightforward catch off Kishan shortly thereafter. Additionally, wicketkeeper Prabhsimran missed a stumping opportunity against Kishan, compounding PBKS’s misfortunes. Such costly blunders contributed significantly to SRH’s imposing total, which proved overwhelming for a power-hitting Punjab lineup.

With this victory, SRH ascends to the top of the IPL 2026 points table, achieving their seventh win in 11 matches. In contrast, PBKS faces a three-match losing streak, now positioned second with 13 points from 10 games.
