The Indian government has activated a bilateral agreement with Singapore to assist in the investigation into the death of Zubeen Garg, a prominent cultural figure from Assam, who drowned while swimming in the sea during a yacht trip in Singapore on September 19. Garg, 52, was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival, organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta, the following day.

Garg’s 13th-day mourning ceremony is set to be conducted on Wednesday in Jorhat. On Monday, the Assam government requested the Union Home Ministry to implement the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) established between India and Singapore in 2005. This treaty facilitates the exchange of evidence, documents, and investigative support regarding criminal cases.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the ministry has invoked the treaty in connection with the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Assam police regarding Garg’s death.
